Being a flutterbug, you'd think I'd have a great garden - but I don't. The Texas summers are harsh and I'm still trying to grow grass. Ha! I've planted some heat tolerant azaleas and a couple rose bushes, all of which look a bit strained since it's been such a wicked summer with higher than usual sustained temps and very little rain. You do inspire me to keep on keeping on...!
Fluterbuggie, you might look into xeriscape planting of you area, those that need little water. myself,i am replacing as much grass, well mowed wild weeds, with raised boxes to pant Veggies. tho they need daily watering, i can eat the by products! the peppers i planted turned out to be too hot for DH so i have extras! who thought Italian roasting peppers had that much fire....
